Hanawa Nobuyuki

Nobuyuki Hanawa writes comedy that feels loose while you are laughing and looks engineered the moment you replay it. His act with the duo Naitz runs on a stream of confidently wrong statements, and the ordering of those errors is far more deliberate than the relaxed delivery lets on. I think he is a comedian who hides hard analysis behind an easygoing face, which is exactly why he can articulate what works and what does not when he sits on the M-1 judging panel. Born in Chiba in 1978, he is also the younger brother of the singer-comedian Hanawa, which makes you wonder what dinner was like in that house. What I respect most is the unglamorous part: instead of chasing television alone, he anchored himself in the traditional yose theatre world and took on leading the Manzai Association. Somebody has to keep that soil from drying out.
