Harumi Shuhama

I love that Harumi Shuhama spent years grinding away on tiny stages before most people learned her name, and there's something perfect about her being a Shimokitazawa kid, raised in that scruffy little-theater district where dreamers sweat it out for nothing but the craft. To me she's the patron saint of the long, unglamorous haul, the actor who keeps showing up because she actually loves the work. When "One Cut of the Dead" finally let the world catch on, she didn't feel like a discovery so much as someone who'd been quietly ready the whole time. I picture her soft-spoken offstage and then ferociously committed the second the lights hit. No flashy resume needed; the sheer accumulated time on those boards is the whole argument. A real one.
