My Take

Helmut Berger fascinates me because his beauty was never the whole story. Yes, he was a sex symbol and pop icon of late-1960s and 1970s European cinema, but what made him unforgettable was his willingness to inhabit narcissistic, ambiguous, self-destructive characters and let real danger and loneliness leak through. His work with Visconti has a decadent, haunted quality few actors could touch. To me he embodies a vanished era of European film that prized risk and mystery over likability. Though he passed in 2023, that strange, glamorous melancholy he left on screen feels permanent.
