My Take

Justin Chon is a great example of someone refusing to be boxed in. A lot of people first met him as Eric Yorkie in the Twilight films, but to me his real identity is as a filmmaker telling Korean-American stories that mainstream cinema kept overlooking. Gook, Ms. Purple, Blue Bayou and Jamojaya feel personal and unflinching in a way studio fare rarely is. I also love that he doesn't take himself too seriously, given his K-pop parody group Boys Generally Asian. That blend of serious artistry and self-aware humor makes him one of the more interesting voices working today.
