Yūsuke Iseya

Okay, so I clocked Yūsuke Iseya as just another impossibly good-looking guy who could've coasted on cheekbones and a modeling reel forever, and then I found out he went to Tokyo University of the Arts, and the whole picture rearranged itself. That's not a "pretty face" credential, that's a serious art-school brain hiding behind matinee-idol bones, and it shows. He doesn't just act, he directs, he makes things, he's got that environmental and creative streak he'll talk about with a totally straight face. What I love most is his supporting-role magnetism, the kind that quietly eats the lead alive, which the 2012 Blue Ribbon nod backed up nicely. Plenty of people are this multi-talented and end up scattered jacks-of-all-trades, but he keeps actually finishing what he starts, and that follow-through is the genuinely impressive part to me. The record also includes his September 2020 arrest for cannabis possession at his home and the one-year prison sentence, suspended for three years, that followed.
