My Take
Selick is the unsung architect of modern stop-motion, forever fighting the assumption that Tim Burton directed The Nightmare Before Christmas. He didn't. Selick did, frame by painstaking frame, the same way he willed Coraline into eerie, tactile life. In an era when CGI can conjure anything instantly, his insistence on physically animating puppets feels almost defiant, an act of devotion more than technique. The 2019 Winsor McCay Award barely covers it. What I prize most is the tone he owns: childhood dread and tenderness fused into one shivering, beautiful thing. Nobody else builds worlds quite like his.
