Hidekazu Tanaka

Hidekazu Tanaka writes the kind of music that makes other composers sit up. Born in Osaka in 1987 and a graduate of Kobe University, he built his reputation writing and arranging for anime and video games, a field where the audience is unusually attentive to craft. His harmonic language is the signature: chord movements that swerve somewhere you did not expect, then land with the tidiness of straightforward pop. That combination is much harder than it sounds. Most writers who chase harmonic surprise lose the melody along the way; most who protect the melody never take the risk at all. I also like that he came through Kobe University rather than a conservatory, in a scene where formal music training is often assumed. He was affiliated with the production house MONACA before going freelance in 2021, which in this industry usually signals that the name on the credit has become the reason work arrives. Worth listening to with the harmony, not the vocal, in the foreground.
