My Take
Hilary Swank earns my respect in a way few Oscar winners do: both of her Academy Awards came from roles that demanded total physical and emotional surrender rather than glamour. Boys Don't Cry and Million Dollar Baby are punishing parts, and she went all the way into each of them. Coming from modest beginnings in Nebraska, she built her career on preparation and nerve rather than connections. I find it telling that she has never seemed interested in protecting a star image; she chases difficult material, accepts the misses, and trusts the work. That kind of artistic honesty ages far better than fame ever does.
