Hiroomi Tosaka

Hiroomi Tosaka — now working under the name ØMI — is one of the vocalists of Sandaime J Soul Brothers, the J-pop group he joined after winning the second Vocal Battle Audition alongside Ryuji Imaichi. Born in Tokyo in 1987, he arrived with the group already twice a Japan Record Award winner during his tenure, which is the kind of résumé most performers would happily coast on. What interests me is that he didn't. He built an acting career on the side, then rebranded his solo work under a new name entirely. Discarding a name that millions of people already recognise is a genuinely risky move in an industry that runs on familiarity; it forces the audience to re-learn you. My read is that he'd rather be uncomfortable than static. Groups like his have a shelf life defined by other people's schedules, and he seems to have understood early that the only way to outlast that is to own something separate. Whether or not the ØMI project eclipses the group, the instinct behind it is sound.
