My Take
What gets me about Hitomi Shimatani is the pivot. She arrived in 1999 as an enka singer, the most tradition-bound corner of Japanese music, and then walked away from it to make dance-pop. That is not a tweak; that is discarding an entire persona and rebuilding in public, with a label watching. It worked. "Amairo no Kami no Otome" is still the song people name first when they hear her name. What I notice just as much is the twenty-two years she spent with one label, in an industry that usually chews through singers and moves on. Longevity like that is not luck. It is somebody deciding, over and over, to keep going, and being willing to become a different artist in order to do it.
