Hoodie Allen

Hoodie Allen's story is the part I keep coming back to. Here is a University of Pennsylvania graduate who landed a job at Google, then walked away from that security to chase hip-hop full time. That kind of conviction is rare, and I think it bleeds into his writing, which feels articulate and self-aware rather than posturing. Reaching number ten on the Billboard 200 with his 2012 EP All American, largely on an independent path, impresses me more than any major-label coronation would. I respect the choice as much as the music.
