Howard Lutnick

Howard Lutnick's story is one I keep returning to because it resists simple judgment. On September 11, Cantor Fitzgerald lost most of its employees, including his brother, and Lutnick — criticized at first, then largely vindicated — rebuilt the firm while funding victims' families for years. That chapter alone would define most lives. Instead he reinvented himself again as Commerce Secretary, placing a Wall Street dealmaker's instincts at the center of national trade policy. Whatever one thinks of his politics, I am fascinated by people who absorb catastrophic loss and respond by taking on more responsibility, not less. He is exactly that rare type.
