Hunter Schafer

Hunter Schafer interests me as someone determined to be judged as an artist rather than a symbol. She came to fame through modeling and through her visibility as a transgender rights activist, but her screen work shows a precision and emotional intelligence that no amount of cultural significance can fake. Her training at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts clearly runs deep, and her ambitions as a screenwriter suggest she wants authorship, not just casting. Still in her twenties, she has already navigated more public scrutiny than most actors face in a lifetime, and she has done it with unusual poise. I suspect her best work is well ahead of her.
