My Take
What draws me to Ian Hunter is the way he turned grit into glamour. As the voice of Mott the Hoople he rode the glam-rock wave, but he never lost the working-class warmth underneath the eyeliner and shades. I admire performers who keep going on their own terms, and Hunter did exactly that, writing and singing long before the band and long after it dissolved. There is something deeply honest about an artist who treats his whole life as raw material for songs. To me he is a craftsman first and a star second, and that is the rarer thing.
