My Take
Ibrahim Maalouf genuinely thrills me. By adapting the quarter-tone trumpet, he found a way to pour Arabic melody into the language of jazz, and the result sounds like nothing else. Lebanese-born, French-based, decorated with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and a César, he became the first Lebanese instrumentalist nominated at the Grammys for Queen of Sheba with Angélique Kidjo. I see an artist who lives on the borderline between worlds, tradition and improvisation, East and West, and turns that tension into bridges. To me, musicians who can make those crossings audible are exactly the treasures our fractured era needs.
