Ichikawa Danjūrō XIII

Inheriting the name Ichikawa Danjuro is not like taking a stage name. It is the largest name in kabuki, carried by twelve men before him, and he received it as the eldest son and successor of Danjuro XII. He spent years famous under an earlier name, which meant the public watched him grow up, fail and grieve in the open. Now he pushes a famously insular art form into daylight through television, film and social media. Purists dislike it. Kabuki survives only if strangers buy tickets.
