Ichiro Aisawa

Ichiro Aisawa has been a member of Japan's House of Representatives since 1986 — first elected in the closing years of the Showa era, which is to say he has been in the Diet longer than many voters have been alive. Born in 1954 in Mitsu, Okayama Prefecture, and educated at Keio University, he has spent that career with the Liberal Democratic Party. He is not the sort of politician who generates headlines abroad, though in 2022 it emerged that he had attended Unification Church-affiliated events and received campaign support from its members. But longevity like that is itself information. Japanese politics rewards visibility, and the loudest figures are the ones outsiders learn first — yet a legislature runs on the people who keep getting returned by their district for decades because the district trusts them. Roughly four decades of that is not an accident. Aisawa belongs to the quieter substructure of postwar Japanese governance, and that is worth noticing precisely because it rarely announces itself.
