Ini Kamoze

Ini Kamoze will forever be tied to "Here Comes the Hotstepper," and what a song to be remembered for. Born in Port Maria, Jamaica, he grew his craft through the early 1980s before that 1994 single topped the US Billboard Hot 100. People too easily dismiss artists with one massive hit, but I hear real artistry in his phrasing and rhythmic instinct. His voice blends an earthy reggae authenticity with an irresistible crossover groove. To me he is proof of reggae's global reach, and that track still moves me every single time I play it.
