My Take
What I admire most about J Mascis is the gap between the wall of fuzz he builds with Dinosaur Jr. and the aching melodicism hiding inside it. He mumbles his way through a verse, then unleashes a solo that genuinely moves you. There's something deeply unpretentious about a guy who came out of small-town Amherst and never bothered to dress up his noise. Sixty now and still that loud, still that careless of fashion, he lets the guitar do most of the talking, though a devotional album for Amma shows a quieter side. That quiet stubbornness is exactly why he endures.
