Ja Rule defined a very specific moment in early-2000s rap for me-the era when gangsta toughness met radio-friendly pop and R&B hooks. Coming out of Hollis, Queens, that hallowed hip-hop ground, he had every right to lean hard, yet his real gift was the crossover duet, the chart-conquering blend that made him inescapable.
