Jack Andraka

Jack Andraka fascinates me less for his obvious brilliance than for his sheer stubbornness. Winning the Gordon E. Moore Award at the Intel science fair as a teenager, with a method aimed at early detection of pancreatic and other cancers, is staggering. But what stays with me is the story of being rejected again and again before someone said yes. He later went on to Stanford, yet his real lesson, I think, is that talent is mostly persistence wearing a lab coat. When kids like him exist, I feel genuinely optimistic about where research is headed.
