Jaki Graham

Jaki Graham deserves far more recognition than nostalgia usually grants her. A Birmingham voice breaking into the mid-80s charts, scoring a string of UK top 20 hits and then, remarkably, topping the US Dance Club chart with her take on Chaka Khan's Ain't Nobody, that is no small feat. Covering an icon and making it your own is one of pop's hardest tricks, and she pulled it off. What I admire most is her staying power; she never chased trends, she simply kept singing with a steady, grounded warmth. To me she is a quietly essential figure in British soul.
