James Gunn is one of those rare directors who managed to smuggle genuine heart into the blockbuster machine without anyone noticing until they were already crying at a raccoon's backstory. He came up through the gloriously trashy Troma school, wrote some genuinely weird stuff, and then somehow talked Marvel into letting him make Guardians of the Galaxy — a movie about a bunch of cosmic misfits that somehow became the emotional backbone of an entire cinematic universe.
