My Take

James Gunn is one of those rare directors who managed to smuggle genuine heart into the blockbuster machine without anyone noticing until they were already crying at a raccoon's backstory. He came up through the gloriously trashy Troma school, wrote some genuinely weird stuff, and then somehow talked Marvel into letting him make Guardians of the Galaxy — a movie about a bunch of cosmic misfits that somehow became the emotional backbone of an entire cinematic universe. The fact that he got fired, then re-hired, then poached by DC to rebuild their whole operation says everything: Hollywood kept proving it needed him more than he needed them. His instinct for pairing absurd humor with real grief is unmatched in the superhero genre, and Guardians Vol. 3 was a genuinely moving send-off that most prestige dramas can't match.

He then began working as a director, starting with the horror-comedy film Slither (2006), and moving to the superhero genre with Super (2010), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.
