Jan Paul van Hecke

What I admire about Jan Paul van Hecke is the quiet trajectory of his story. Born in 2000 in a small corner of Zeeland, he chose the least glamorous role on the pitch, the centre-back, and rose all the way to the Premier League and the Dutch national team. I have a soft spot for defenders precisely because their work is invisible until it isn't, measured in mistakes prevented rather than goals scored. There is something deeply satisfying about a player from a sleepy seaside province becoming a wall the world has to get past. I will be watching his climb with real interest.
