My Take

Jan Svěrák fascinates me less for the trophies than for the partnership behind them. Collaborating with his own father, the actor and writer Zdeněk Svěrák, he produced the Oscar-winning Kolya, and there is something quietly moving about a son and father building enduring art together rather than drifting apart. His repeated Czech Lion wins for Best Director mark him as a custodian of his country's film history, and I prefer his patient, humane Central European storytelling to louder Hollywood fare. Honored in 2021 for his contribution to Czech cinema, he reads to me as a national conscience, an unhurried master worth seeking out.

Jan Svěrák (Czech pronunciation: [ˈjan ˈsvjɛraːk]; born 6 February 1965) is a Czech film director and screenwriter. He is the son of screenwriter and actor Zdeněk Svěrák, with whom he collaborated on his most successful films. He is among the most recognised Czech filmmakers. His best-known films are the Oscar-winning Kolya and the Oscar-nominated The Elementary School.
