My Take

Jane Fonda is one of those rare people who just refuses to coast. Two Academy Awards — Klute in 1972, Coming Home in 1979 — would be enough legacy for most actors, but she's never been most actors. She came up as Hollywood royalty (Henry Fonda's daughter) and spent decades proving the name was hers to own, not just inherit. What I find genuinely compelling about her is that she keeps reinventing without losing the thread: serious dramatic actress, 1980s fitness-video phenomenon, Ted Turner's wife, Grace and Frankie scene-stealer into her eighties. And through all of it, the activist streak she's had since Vietnam never faded — if anything it sharpened. She got arrested at a climate protest in her eighties and seemed almost delighted about it. That's not performance; that's just who she is. The AFI Life Achievement Award in 2014 felt overdue.
