Jean van de Velde

Jean van de Velde will forever be tied to that surreal final hole at the 1999 Open, and honestly I find it one of the most human moments in all of golf. Rather than seeing a choke, I see a competitor who refused to play it safe, even wading into the burn to take his shot. There is something I deeply respect about a man remembered more for his nerve than for a trophy. This Frenchman from Mont-de-Marsan reminds me that sport is theater, and the near-misses often outlive the wins in our memory.
