Jeff Scott Soto

Soto is a singer's singer, and that is why I rate him so highly. Fronting Yngwie Malmsteen's early albums, briefly leading Journey, anchoring Talisman, and lending his voice to Sons of Apollo shows a versatility that hard rock rarely demands of one vocalist. The Brooklyn-born, Puerto Rican-descended performer keeps getting called back by serious musicians, which to me is the clearest proof of trust in his voice. Behind flashy guitarists he supplies the spine of a song with real conviction. I have a deep respect for craftsmen like him who let the work, not the spotlight, do the talking.
