My Take
Jessie Mueller is, to me, the real thing in American musical theatre. Two Jeff Awards in Chicago before she ever conquered Broadway, then a Tony for Best Actress in a Musical and a Drama Desk award to match. That trajectory tells you everything: she built her craft in the regional trenches before the spotlight found her. I have a particular reverence for performers who must deliver live, eight shows a week, with a voice that cannot be fixed in post-production. Mueller belongs to that lineage of singing actors whose power simply does not translate to a screen, and that is precisely why I treasure her.
