My Take

Jhonny Acosta is the kind of footballer I always end up rooting for. Born in Quesada, a small town in Costa Rica's San Carlos region, he built a career as a defender rather than a goal-scorer. At 176 cm he was never an imposing centre-back, yet he became part of the Costa Rican backbone during the era when that nation kept startling the world at major tournaments. Defending is the thankless job, and doing it for your country takes a particular toughness. I admire the players who win games by stopping them, and Acosta clearly chose that harder road.
