My Take
Jiang Wen is one of those rare filmmakers who genuinely does it all — acting, directing, writing — and pulls off each with this overwhelming, almost reckless confidence that you either love or find completely exhausting. I love it. His debut film In the Heat of the Sun is a coming-of-age masterpiece that feels totally unlike anything else out of 1990s Chinese cinema, and Devils on the Doorstep, which won him the Grand Prix at Cannes, is sharp, dark, and genuinely unforgettable. Let the Bullets Fly became a massive commercial smash on top of the critical respect, proving he could work at any scale. He even showed up in Rogue One and somehow held his own in a Hollywood blockbuster without losing an ounce of that particular Jiang Wen swagger. A complete original.
