Jim Watkins

Jim Watkins is a figure I find impossible to praise easily, yet impossible to ignore. A mechanic from Dayton, Washington who became a major force online, he ran 8chan and 5channel and embodies the darker, more chaotic underside of internet culture. His path from the US Army to building websites in Japan is genuinely unusual. I will not celebrate the man, but the influence of keeping such notorious anonymous platforms running, for better and worse, is undeniable. He stands, to me, as an uncomfortable but essential reference point when we try to make sense of the modern internet.
