My Take

I think Jimi Hendrix is the closest thing rock ever had to pure alchemy, and I still can't quite believe how much he reshaped the guitar in just a few short years. Yeah, the showmanship was wild, playing with his teeth, behind his back, lighting the thing on fire, but strip all that away and you're left with this Seattle kid who heard sounds nobody else could hear and somehow made the instrument cry, scream, and whisper at will. His "Star-Spangled Banner" at Woodstock still gives me chills, equal parts beautiful and furious. He was gone at 27, which breaks my heart every time I think about it, but the work he left behind, Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, all of it, still sounds like it landed from the future. What a once-in-forever talent.
