Jimmy Lai

I refuse to file Jimmy Lai away as merely an entrepreneur. From a penniless arrival in Hong Kong he built Giordano, then founded Apple Daily and turned it into a fortress of free expression. He could have stopped at wealth, but he chose to stake his freedom on principle and now sits in prison for it. The 2021 Golden Pen of Freedom feels less like a prize than the world's applause for that stance. From the comfort of safety I can only watch in awe; people willing to bet their lives on what they believe are why a free press survives.
