My Take
What I admire most about Joanna Lumley is the sheer range of her life. Plenty of actors are funny; very few are also Fellows of the Royal Geographical Society. Her Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous remains one of the great comic creations of British television, all champagne and chaos, yet the woman behind it is an author, traveler, and activist born in Srinagar in 1946. The 2017 BAFTA Fellowship felt less like an award than an acknowledgment of the obvious. She proves that glamour and intellect were never opposites, and that growing older can mean growing more interesting.
