Joe Lynn Turner

Joe Lynn Turner is one of those voices that hard rock genuinely needed in the early 80s — smooth enough to give Rainbow a radio-friendly sheen without sacrificing any of the band's muscle. Growing up in New Jersey gave him that blue-collar work ethic, and you can hear it in how committed he sounds on tracks like "I Surrender" and "Stone Cold," which are melodic hard rock at its absolute finest. The fact that he sang for both Rainbow and Deep Purple puts him in rarefied air, and his run with Yngwie Malmsteen added yet another chapter to an already restless career. He's never been the flashiest name in the room, but for anyone who actually cares about classic hard rock singers, Turner is a serious heavyweight.
