My Take
Joe R. Lansdale strikes me as a writer who turned the Texas landscape itself into prose. Roaming freely across horror, science fiction, mystery, and Western, and doubling as a martial arts instructor, he has a range that should scatter most authors but instead concentrates into something distinctly his own. The Edgar Award and a Bram Stoker Lifetime Achievement Award prove he leaps genre walls with ease. What I admire most is that beneath all that restless variety runs a single steady current: a deep love of place and people. He is the opposite of a jack-of-all-trades, a genuine, full-blooded storyteller.
