My Take

I have a soft spot for Joe Spano because he is the kind of dependable character actor who quietly elevates everything he is in. His Henry Goldblume on Hill Street Blues was the conscience of that squad room, all earnest decency, and decades later he turned Fornell on NCIS into a perfect prickly foil for Gibbs. He came up through Berkeley Repertory Theatre, and you can feel that stage discipline in how he listens on camera. He is never the flashiest name on the call sheet, but casting him is shorthand for credibility, and that earned reliability is its own kind of stardom.
