My Take
John Dahl is a director I file under quietly essential. Red Rock West and The Last Seduction have a dry, coiled tension and a knack for the well-earned twist that few neo-noir filmmakers match, and their cult status is the truest compliment they could get. There's something of his Montana roots in that spare, watchful atmosphere. I also like how easily he later slid into television rather than chasing prestige features. Dahl never went for spectacle; he specialized in cold, human malice, and he renders it beautifully. He's a craftsman whose smaller films outlast a lot of bigger ones.
