My Take
John Ireland is one of those faces I associate instantly with the golden age of the Western, even when I can't immediately name the film. My Darling Clementine, Red River, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, he was a reliable supporting presence in some of the genre's defining titles. What interests me is that he was Vancouver-born and New York-raised, which complicates the very American mythology he helped build on screen. He also worked behind the camera as a screenwriter and editor, which I think gave his performances a craftsman's awareness. The Hollywood Walk of Fame star feels earned for someone who anchored so many ensembles without ever demanding the lead.
