My Take
I'll be honest — I came to John le Carré late, expecting slick Bond-adjacent thrills, and got something completely different: cold corridors, moral exhaustion, and spies who lie to themselves as fluently as they lie to the enemy. The man wasn't just writing about the intelligence world — he lived inside it, working for MI5 and MI6 before his pen name became more famous than his real one (David Cornwell). The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is the book that still haunts me most, that bleak final scene feeling less like fiction and more like a confession about what the Cold War actually cost. George Smiley — unglamorous, cuckolded, brilliant — is one of the great characters in twentieth-century literature, full stop. Le Carré died in December 2020, and I think we're only now starting to measure the size of the hole he left.
