My Take

To me, John Woo is the poet of the gunfight. Born in Guangzhou and forged in Hong Kong cinema, he turned violence into something balletic, even spiritual, with his slow-motion doves and twin-pistol standoffs. What I admire most is his refusal to dilute that aesthetic, even after Hollywood came calling. The awards, the Golden Horse and the Bauhinia Star, are nice, but they undersell him. He is one of the few directors who can make carnage feel like devotion, brotherhood, and grief all at once. I still get chills watching his work.
