My Take

Jonny Lee Miller is my favorite kind of actor: the one who never needed to be the biggest name in the room to be the most interesting presence in it. Sick Boy in Trainspotting could have typecast him forever, but he kept choosing odd, demanding work — and the Olivier Award tells you where his heart really lives, on stage. I admire performers who treat fame as a byproduct rather than a goal, and Miller has quietly built one of the most durable careers of his generation that way. Whenever his name turns up in a cast list, I trust the project a little more.

He achieved early success for his portrayal of Simon "Sick Boy" Williamson in the dark comedy-drama film Trainspotting (1996) and as Dade Murphy in Hackers (1995), then earning further critical recognition for his performances in Afterglow (1997), Mansfield Park (1999), Mindhunters (2004), The Flying Scotsman (2006), Endgame (2009), and T2 Trainspotting…
