My Take
Judd Apatow changed what mainstream American comedy is allowed to feel like, and I respect him enormously for it. Films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up look like raunchy comedies on the poster, but underneath they are unexpectedly tender studies of immature men stumbling toward decency. That blend of vulgarity and warmth is far harder to pull off than it looks. Just as important is his role as a talent incubator: an entire generation of comedic actors and writers came up through his productions. To me he is less a director than an ecosystem, and American comedy would be measurably poorer without him.
