Julia Nickson-Soul

Nickson interests me as a quiet trailblazer. Born in Singapore and educated in Hawaii, she stepped onto a Hollywood stage that offered Asian actresses almost nothing, then held her own opposite Stallone in Rambo: First Blood Part II. That kind of presence, in that era, took real nerve. What I respect even more is the persistence that followed, the unglamorous years of television and independent film that kept her working long after the splashy debut. She opened a door through sheer poise, and I think the path she walked deserves far more recognition than it usually gets.
