Júlio Baptista

Júlio Baptista is the rare Brazilian who forced his way through with sheer power. Nicknamed 'The Beast' for his 185 cm frame, he played attacking midfield and forward at Sevilla, Real Madrid and Arsenal, and his driving runs and ferocious shooting were genuinely intimidating. In a footballing culture obsessed with finesse, his physical, bulldozing approach made him an outlier I found fascinating. Now moving into coaching, I'm curious how he translates that raw destructiveness into teaching. I'll confess I prefer this kind of untamed, charging player to the merely elegant ones. There was nothing polite about watching him play.
