My Take

Juvenile is, in my view, one of the architects of Southern hip-hop's mainstream breakthrough. Coming out of New Orleans bounce as a teenager and then helping power Cash Money's Hot Boys, he carried a regional sound onto the national stage with that unmistakable drawl and bass-heavy bounce. I admire artists who stay rooted in where they came from, and he never sanded off the New Orleans edges. Beyond the hits, his reach into acting and songwriting shows real versatility. He doesn't always get the historical credit he deserves, and I think that's an oversight worth correcting.

Overview

Terius Gray (born March 26, 1975), better known by his stage name Juvenile, is an American rapper best known for his work with Birdman's Cash Money Records in the late 1990s and early 2000s, both solo and as a member of the label's then-flagship group, Hot Boys. Juvenile's career began in the early 1990s as a teenager with bounce music recordings that earned him local recognition.
