My Take
Baruto Kaito, born Kaido Höövelson in Väike-Maarja, Estonia, in 1984, had the kind of sumo career that would be a complete story on its own. He debuted in May 2004 and reached the top division by May 2006, which is fast by any standard, and at 198 cm he was physically unmistakable in the ring. But the part I keep turning over is what came after. Retiring from sumo and then becoming a politician in your home country is a genuinely strange arc, and doing it across two cultures rather than within one makes it stranger still. He has also worked as an actor. Estonia awarded him the Order of the White Star, third class, which tells you he is not merely a returned athlete there but a recognisable national figure. Foreign wrestlers in sumo often get framed as visitors passing through a Japanese institution. He committed to it fully, then built an entirely separate public life on top of it. Very few people get two acts that distinct.
