Kaito Ishikawa

Here's what gets me about Kaito Ishikawa: the guy grew up in Koto-ku, Tokyo — one of the most basketball-saturated urban environments in Japan — and still decided that wasn't enough. He packed his bags as a teenager and headed all the way to Sendai to attend Meisei High School, which is basically a hallowed name in Japanese high school basketball. That's not a casual choice. That's a kid who looked at the comfortable local path and said no thanks. Nihon University came after, which means he saw the full pipeline from powerhouse prep school to competitive college ball. As a pro he became one of B2's great playmakers, a two-time assists leader who once dished out 19 in a single game, a B.League record, and a player whose foundation is built on that kind of voluntary sacrifice and long-distance ambition earns my respect.
