Kanehisa Arime

Growing up in Naha, Okinawa already puts you in a different headspace than the average Japanese ballplayer — there's something about that southern island light and the laid-back toughness that breeds a particular kind of grit. Standing 180cm, he'd have cut a solid figure on the field. He spent eleven seasons pitching for Kintetsu and Rakuten, earned an All-Star selection in his eighth pro year, and now coaches pitchers for Hayate Ventures Shizuoka — and honestly, I respect that kind of career more than the flashy ones. Making it as a professional baseball player in Japan, traveling from a small island to the mainland to compete at that level, takes a kind of determination that doesn't always make the highlight reel but absolutely deserves the acknowledgment.
